Are fillings made of porcelain or gold that fit into the tooth. They are indicated when there is too little tooth structure to predictibly support a white filling but there is enough tooth to avoid placing a crown, which is more destructive to the tooth.
Inlays/Onlays take 2 visits to complete. First session is when when the decay or old filling is removed, and impression is taken and a temporary filling is placed. The impression will be sent to the laboratory and the technician will create a custom made inlay or onlay that will fit exactly to the tooth.
The big advantage of Onlays/Inlays is that there are more durable than white fillings.
